Teacher's Script: Regular and Irregular Nouns

Time: About 8--10 minutes

Level: Beginner to Elementary

Topic: Regular and irregular plural nouns

1. Greeting and Warm-up (1 minute)

Teacher:

Good morning, everyone. Today we are going to learn about regular nouns and irregular nouns.

Actually, to be more precise, we are going to talk about regular plural nouns and irregular plural nouns .

A noun /naʊn/ names a person, place, thing, animal, or idea.

Most nouns can become plural. How they change tells us if they are regular or irregular.

Look at these two examples:

  • one book → two books
  • one child → two children

In the first example, we simply add -s . That is a regular noun .

In the second example, the word changes completely. That is an irregular noun.

Today we will learn the rules for both.

2. Regular Plural Nouns (2 minutes)

Teacher:

Let's start with regular nouns .

A regular noun forms its plural in a predictable way.

(Write on the board.)

Regular plural rules:

  1. Add -s to most nouns.

    book → books

    car → cars

    dog → dogs

  2. Add -es after s, x, ch, sh, o .

    bus → buses

    box → boxes

    watch → watches

    dish → dishes

    potato → potatoes

  3. Consonant + y → change y to i and add -es .

    city → cities

    baby → babies

study → studies (noun: study → studies)

  4. Vowel + y → just add -s .

    boy → boys

    day → days

    toy → toys

  5. Some nouns ending in f / fe → change to -ves .

    knife → knives

    wife → wives

    leaf → leaves

    wolf → wolves

But be careful: some just add -s .

roof → roofs

chief → chiefs

belief → beliefs

Teacher:

So regular nouns follow clear rules. You can usually predict the plural form.

Repeat after me:

book → books

box → boxes

city → cities

knife → knives

(Students repeat.)

3. Irregular Plural Nouns (2.5 minutes)

Teacher:

Now let's look at irregular nouns .

These nouns do not follow the normal rules. You have to memorise them.

(Write on the board.)

Common irregular plurals:

  • man → men
  • woman → women
  • child → children
  • tooth → teeth
  • foot → feet
  • mouse → mice
  • goose → geese
  • person → people

Some nouns do not change at all:

  • sheep → sheep
  • fish → fish (usually; fishes means different species)
  • deer → deer
  • series → series
  • species → species

Some nouns come from Latin or Greek:

  • analysis → analyses
  • crisis → crises
  • phenomenon → phenomena
  • datum → data
  • medium → media

Teacher:

These are very common in academic English, so they are useful to know.

Repeat after me:

man → men

child → children

tooth → teeth

sheep → sheep

analysis → analyses

(Students repeat.)

4. Uncountable Nouns (1 minute)

Teacher:

One more important point: some nouns are uncountable .

They do not have a plural form.

Examples:

water, milk, rice, information, advice, furniture, homework, traffic, news.

We do not say:

❌ informations

❌ advices

❌ furnitures

❌ homeworks

We say:

✅ some information

✅ a piece of advice

✅ a lot of furniture

✅ a lot of homework

Teacher:

So remember: countable nouns can be regular or irregular. Uncountable nouns have no plural form.

5. Common Mistakes (1 minute)

Teacher:

Let's correct some common mistakes together. I will say the wrong form. You say the correct one.

  1. Wrong: two childs

    Correct: two children

  2. Wrong: three mans

    Correct: three men

  3. Wrong: many informations

    Correct: a lot of information

  4. Wrong: two sheeps

    Correct: two sheep

  5. Wrong: some advices

Correct: some advice / pieces of advice

  6. Wrong: two foots

    Correct: two feet

(Students repeat the correct forms.)

Teacher:

Remember: irregular nouns change in special ways, and uncountable nouns do not change at all.

6. Quick Practice (1 minute)

Teacher:

Now let's practise. Give me the plural form of these nouns.

  1. book
  2. box
  3. city
  4. child
  5. man
  6. tooth
  7. sheep
  8. information

  5. men
  6. teeth
  7. sheep
  8. information (uncountable)

  10. women

7. Summary and Homework (30 seconds)

Teacher:

Let's summarise.

Regular nouns form plurals with -s , -es , -ies , or -ves .

Irregular nouns change in special ways, like man → men , child → children , tooth → teeth .

Some nouns do not change, like sheep → sheep .

And uncountable nouns have no plural form, like information , advice , and furniture.

Your homework:

Write ten nouns: five regular and five irregular.

Write their plural forms.

Then write one sentence for each plural noun.

That's all for today. Thank you, everyone. See you next class!
