- Could you briefly introduce yourself?
Good morning/afternoon, teachers. My name is Jiang Nawei, and I'm from Siping, Jilin. I finished my study at Changchun University of Science and Technology in 2019. My major was Mechanical Engineering. I have 5 years of work experience. First, I worked as a Mechanical Design Engineer for 2 years. Then I worked as a Software Engineer at ChinaSoft International for 3 years. I like to challenge myself. I rode a bike on the Sichuan-Tibet Road and finished some marathons. I hope to learn more management skills in Chongqing University's MEM program. I want to be a good engineering manager. Thank you.
- Why did you choose to pursue a Master's in Engineering Management (MEM) at Chongqing University?
My long-term goal is to be a good engineering manager. But I don't have enough management skills, though I know a lot about technology. Chongqing University has a very good MEM program. It has close links with many industries in Southwest China, so we can get lots of practical resources. Its school motto "Virtues, Knowledge, Aspiration, Eminence" encourages me a lot. I think this program can teach me leadership, planning and organization skills. These skills can help me connect my technical skills with good management work.
- What are your short-term, mid-term, and long-term career goals?
Short-term goal: I want to learn engineering management theories and methods well in the MEM program. I need to make up for my lack of management knowledge.
Mid-term goal: I hope to be a technical team leader in 5 years. I want to lead the team to make new technologies.
Long-term goal: I will use my experience in mechanical design and software development, and combine them with new technologies like AI and industrial internet. I want to find new management ways in intelligent manufacturing.
- How did your work experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer shape you?
Those 2 years helped me learn practical skills in product design, model making and manufacturing. It made me better at solving problems. I also built a good base of engineering knowledge. I learned that being careful and serious is very important in technical work. These good qualities also help me do well in my later software engineering job.
- What achievements did you make during your 3 years at ChinaSoft International?
I joined the R&D work of Huawei HiSilicon's toolchain and cloud service product lines. I was in charge of backend design, development and maintenance. I worked closely with different teams and finished many projects well and quickly. I got the "New Star Award", two bonuses and three B+ grades in a row. I also organized technical sharing meetings and team activities to make the team more united.
- Why did you switch from mechanical engineering to software engineering?
I was very interested in software development, so I wanted to learn more new things. After the switch, I learned programming languages, software development methods and project management tools. I also learned about IT project management. This made me love management work. And it built a good technical base for me to be an engineering manager in the future.
- How do your hobbies (e.g., cycling the Sichuan-Tibet route, marathons) contribute to your career development?
These hard activities made me more persistent and strong. They also let me dare to try new things. To finish long bike rides and marathons, I need to plan well, keep working hard and have the courage to get over difficulties. These good qualities are also very useful for my work, especially when I lead a team, manage difficult projects or face work pressure.
- What do you think are your greatest strengths for the MEM program and future career?
First, I know both mechanical and software engineering. So I can understand work in different departments. Second, my 5-year work experience lets me know how to do projects well and how to work with a team. Third, I like to learn new things and challenge myself. I am responsible and persistent. All these can help me study well in the MEM program and be a good engineering manager.
- What areas do you think you need to improve in? How will you address them through the MEM program?
I don't have systematic knowledge in leadership, strategic planning and organizational behavior. The MEM program has courses about these key areas. I plan to take part in lectures, case studies and group projects actively. I will also learn from teachers and classmates. I will use the theories in real situations and make my management skills better and better.
- How do you balance technical work and management in your future career?
I think technical skills are the base of management work. A good engineering manager must understand the technical work of the team. So I will keep learning new technologies. At the same time, I will spend time on management work, like making plans, communicating with team members and solving problems f
